Learn How To Make Fermented Foods
Using the Ancient Art of Fermentation
with Farmstead Ferments

Farmstead Ferments will be offering a two-part fermentation workshop on Sunday, January 7th at our Farmstead Mercantile storefront at 330 Valley Street, Scottsville, VA. In the morning session, we’ll learn how to craft fermented vegetables into krauts and pickles. The afternoon session will focus on brewing refreshing sodas and beverages at home. Join us for one or both parts. We hope to see you!

SCHEDULE

10:00 – 12:00 pm
Morning Session: Fermenting the Garden Harvest

Learn how easy it is to transform the garden harvest into nutritious and delicious fermented foods and beverages using the ancient technique of lacto-fermentation. We’ll start with discussing the history of fermented foods as well as the reasons why including them in your diet and lifestyle is one of the most important health decisions you can make. Then, participants will roll up their sleeves by creating their own unique sauerkrauts and pickles using a variety of vegetables, herbs and spices. Sampling of a wide array of sauerkrauts, kimchi, pickles, kombucha and water kefir sodas will also be included.

Bring Brown Bag Lunch supplemented with our Kraut, Pickle & Soda Bar Plus additional time to explore the quaint and walkable village of Scottsville

Afternoon Session: Healthy Homestead Homebrews
It’s easy to craft your own nutritious and delicious “sodas” at home using the ancient art of fermentation! Learn how to make a wide variety of healing and effervescent beverages including kombucha, water kefir soda, beet kvass, root beer, ginger beer and more using a wide variety of cultures. Sample fermented beverages and find out why consuming them is one of the most cost-effective and health-affective choices you can make!

Dawn Story
Dawn Story is the creatrix of Farmstead Ferments artisanal, fermented foods and brews and New Moon Alchemy & Apothecary. She homesteads in southern Albemarle County, Virginia, alongside a diverse poultry flock, bee hives, three cats, and two dogs, where she gathers garden harvest and wild-foraged plants that inspire hand-crafted fermented foods, medicinal brews, and what’s for supper. She is humbled and blessed to do what she loves as a means to right livelihood, sustenance and community empowerment.

Brian Neitzel
Brian’s love of the outdoors was seeded by his rural Wisconsin upbringing wherein farming and preserving the harvest were a part of his family’s daily life. Today, Brian enjoys combining his farmstead wisdom with his food-artistry passion and inspires both the produce and the products being offered by Farmstead Ferments naturally-fermented foods and brews. He is the jack of all trades, helping with everything from production and distribution to brewing, building, planting, and harvesting.
